The colon is not a waste bin
Ask most people what the colon does and you get some version of "it handles waste". That is not wrong, exactly. It is like describing a brewery as a warehouse for barley.
Four jobs, not one
Around a metre and a half long, the colon receives whatever the small intestine could not absorb — a slurry of water, minerals, and the plant material your enzymes had no tool for. It does four things with it.
It reclaims water. A litre or more of fluid arrives each day, and most of it is absorbed back. This is why the state of your colon shows up so directly in the state of your stool: too little water reclaimed and things move too fast, too much and they move too slowly.
It handles electrolytes. Sodium and other minerals are absorbed alongside the water, which is part of why prolonged diarrhoea is a systemic problem rather than only an inconvenient one.
It forms stool. What remains is compacted and held until it can be passed. Fibre matters here mechanically: material that holds water keeps the mass soft, and material that adds bulk keeps it moving.
And it ferments. This is the one nobody teaches, and it is the reason this course exists.
Why the colon is slow on purpose
Food spends a few hours in the small intestine. It can spend a day or more in the colon. That looks inefficient until you realise what is happening in the meantime.
Microbial fermentation is not fast. Bacteria have to attach to a fibre, break into its structure, and metabolise it — a process measured in hours, not minutes. A colon that emptied as briskly as the small intestine would give its residents no time to work.
Slow transit is not a design flaw. It is the condition that makes fermentation possible at all.
What it produces
The output of that fermentation is not waste. Microbes break fibre into short-chain fatty acids, gases, and a range of other compounds — and some of those are absorbed and used by you. One of them is the primary fuel for the cells lining the colon itself.
Which is a strange and rather elegant arrangement. The organ that hosts the fermentation is partly fed by it.
Go deeper: why the environment inside matters
The colon is largely oxygen-poor, and that is not incidental. The organisms that perform most of the useful fermentation are strict anaerobes — oxygen is actively hostile to them. A colon with more oxygen in it supports a different, generally less desirable set of organisms.
What keeps it oxygen-poor turns out to be linked to fermentation itself, through a loop we will come to in Chapter 9. For now it is enough to note that the environment and its inhabitants maintain each other.
The colon reclaims water, handles minerals and forms stool. It also runs a fermentation that feeds its own lining. Only one of those four jobs is disposal.
What to hold on to
When you read that a fibre "supports regularity", that is the water and bulk mechanism. When you read that a fibre "feeds your microbiome", that is fermentation. Both happen in the same organ, and a fibre can be excellent at one and irrelevant to the other.
Which raises the obvious question. Who exactly is doing the fermenting?
