How to grade any fibre

Everything in this part reduces to four questions you can ask of any fibre product, including ours. They are not marketing questions. Each one maps onto a mechanism you now understand.

One: does it cover more than one function?

Not more than one ingredient — more than one function. Those are different claims, and the gap between them is where most "multi-fibre" products live.

Five fibres that all dissolve thinly and ferment quickly are one function listed five times. The label looks diverse; the behaviour is not. What you are checking is whether the product covers distinct jobs: something that gels, something readily fermented, something that resists.

The test: for each ingredient, name the job it does that the others cannot. If two ingredients give the same answer, one of them is decoration.

Two: does fermentation spread out?

A product can be genuinely diverse in structure and still be finished in the first stretch of the colon.

You are looking for a range of fermentation rates — something early, something in the middle, something slow enough to still be working late. That spread is what determines whether the far end of the colon receives anything at all.

The test: is anything in this product slowly fermented? If every ingredient is a fast, fully fermented prebiotic, it is a proximal product regardless of how many fibres it lists.

Three: is the dose enough to matter?

This is where most products fail, and it fails quietly.

Fibre is a bulk nutrient. It works at grams, not milligrams, which is why a capsule cannot carry a useful amount of it. That is not a criticism of capsules; it is arithmetic about what fits inside one.

But the obvious version of this test gets something wrong, and it is worth being precise. A blend built for substrate variety cannot put every fibre at the dose it was studied at on its own. Those trials each tested a single fibre in isolation, and the doses are larger than people assume — psyllium around 10 g, inulin around 10 g, acacia 20 g or more, resistant starch 15 to 30 g, pectin 15 g. Match them all at once and the scoop is past 50 g, which is several times what anyone should take in a day, let alone a serving.

So the honest test is two questions rather than one. Is the total meaningful — grams, not a gesture? And is each ingredient present at a level that could plausibly do the job it is there for? A gel-former has to be present in enough quantity to actually gel. A fibre included to widen what the community is fed does not have to reproduce a monotherapy result to do that.

What this still catches, and it catches a great deal: the twelve-fibre blend where ten of the twelve sit at fifty milligrams. Those are not contributing variety. They are contributing a longer ingredient list. The line between the two is whether the amount could do anything at all.

Four: can you see every gram?

You cannot apply the first three tests to a product that will not tell you its amounts.

"Proprietary blend" means the manufacturer has decided you should not be able to check. Occasionally there is a real formulation reason. Much more often the blend is mostly the cheapest ingredient, and disclosure would show it.

The test: are per-ingredient amounts printed, and do they add up to the stated total? If they do not add up, something is missing from the account.

Applying it to Buta-8

The rubric is worth nothing if we exempt ourselves, so here is where we sit and where we do not.

On function, we cover six fibre types across four concentrates and two whole fruits — psyllium's gel, resistant starch's butyrate route, inulin's fast feed, acacia's slow one, and the pectin and cellulose the fruits bring — each doing something the others do not. On spread, the range runs from inulin fermenting early to acacia and psyllium still working late. On transparency, every gram is printed and the amounts add up.

On dose, two honest limits. Buta-8 is around 8 g of fibre per serving and your body wants substantially more than that daily — it is built to fill the hardest part of the gap on top of food, not to be your fibre intake. And by the test above, no single fibre in it sits at its solo studied dose, because as set out there, nothing that ferments across a spectrum can. What each one has to earn is its role, not a monotherapy result.

One thing to be clear about: this is a design argument, built on how each fibre is established to behave. The finished blend has not been through its own trial. Nor has almost anything else on the shelf — the difference is that we say so.

Go deeper: two questions the rubric deliberately leaves out

Strain counts and colony-forming units. Those belong to probiotics, which are live organisms. Fibre is a substrate. A fibre product advertising bacterial counts has confused the two categories, or is selling you both and would rather you not separate them.

"Clinically proven." Ask what was tested. Very often it is a single ingredient at a dose the product does not contain, or a study on a different population, or work commissioned and unpublished. An ingredient with good independent evidence is a legitimate thing to point at. A finished product borrowing that evidence for itself is not the same claim, and the distinction is usually load-bearing.

Function over ingredient count. Spread over speed. Grams over gestures. Amounts you can see. Four questions, and they work on every product on the shelf.

What to hold on to

You now have a way to grade any fibre without taking anyone's word for it, and the mechanisms underneath it to know why each question is the right one.
